Circular Economy Incubator Hub
Nokia, Finland
Located on Tehdassaari Island, this initiative focuses on transforming a former industrial site into a dynamic space for circular economy innovation. The Circular Economy Incubator Hub will bring together businesses to collaborate on sustainable projects, sharing byproducts and developing closed-loop systems. A key feature will be a mobile application that facilitates resource flow management within the hub, promoting the efficient use of materials. The goal is to create a collaborative environment where research, development and experimentation can thrive, contributing to a sustainable future for the community and beyond.
Reykjavik, Iceland
This project seeks to create a decentralised borrowing system—the libraries of things—allowing community-led libraries across Europe to integrate into a unified Circular Library Network. By helping establish local sharing stations, the project encourages community engagement and the sharing of resources, fostering a culture of sustainability. Through this network, communities will be empowered to share everything from tools to household items, creating both environmental and social benefits. The ultimate goal of the project is to reduce waste, enhance resource circularity and lower the need for personal ownership.
Ghent, Belgium
Rewrap, a project by Material Mastery, introduces a sustainable solution to replace single-use pallet wrap with a reusable alternative made from repurposed big bags. This innovative approach not only reduces waste but also creates job opportunities in social workshops. With the EU Green Deal phasing out single-use pallet wraps, Rewrap aims to tap into the emerging market of reusable wraps. Having successfully tested their prototype, the team is preparing for market launch, with plans to produce over 5,000 units annually using automated processes.
Roubaix, France
Tissel is transforming a nearly abandoned factory in Roubaix into a vibrant hub for circular economy SMEs. The project, initiated by the city to preserve the site, involves renovating the building using low-tech, circular methods while meeting modern safety and accessibility standards. The restoration includes roof repairs, insulation, and the installation of photovoltaic panels. Once completed, the site will house a production area on the ground floor, a business incubator on the first floor, and an event space on the second. Tissel aims to create a thriving community of circular economy businesses, breathing new life into the historic building.
